The Upper Dolpo trekking initiates at the north- west region behind the Dhaulagiri massif, towards the Tibetan plateau. The Upper Dolpo trek route passes through the most isolated remote areas of western land. Dolpo, a land beyond the Himalaya, conjures up visions of mysterious monasteries, snow leopards and blue sheep. The traditions and way of life have remained intact in Dolpo Region since decades. Upper Dolpo is a region of mystical beauty. And its remoteness adds to the sense of adventure among its visitors. The customs and traditions seems here are quite similar to those of Tibet. It is one of the restricted trekking regions of Nepal. It offers rare opportunities to explore many unseen parts of the region. Referred as "The Forbidden Kingdom" in its own term, it happened to be closed for foreigners. It’s required special permit. The abundance of Himalayan wildlife, including, Musk Deer, Himalayan Blue Sheep and rare Snow Leopard, makes it an Eco-trek destination as well.
Trek begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj about 45 minutes and next morning flight ends at Jhupal. The trail passes through numerous gigantic mountain ranges, over the Numa La pass (5,190m/17,028ft), till you reach Phoksundo Lake at Ringmo village inside the Phoksundo National Park. After a day rest, one can continue on the trail crossing different passes to Jumla. The main highlights of the trek is an ancients, spectacular landscapes, mesmerizing Shey Phoksundo lake, isolated villages of Ringmo and the centuries old monasteries. Phoksundo is the deepest lake of Nepal with its 145m depth according to a survey by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology. Such like centuries old Buddhist monasteries (which is known as Shey Gompa) wildlife, pristine lake, soaring peaks and peoples lifestyle of least develop region are also another attraction of the trek. Here is a holy mountain called “Crystal Mountain” that is why, each year hundreds of pilgrims travelers visit upper Dolpo region and make a circuit of the mountain.
Day 01: Flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj.
Day 02: Early morning flight to Juphal.
Day 03: Trek continue from Juphal to Menkhang.
Day 04: Trek from Menkhang to Phoksundo.
Day 05: Rest and acclimatization day.
Day 06: Trek from Phoksundo to Chunemba.
Day 07: Trek from Chunemba to Snowfields.
Day 08: Trek through Ngadra La Pass to Shey Gompa.
Day 09: Trek from Shey Gompa to Namgung.
Day 10: Trek through Namgung to Sibu.
Day 11: Trek through Sibu to Lagmo Che.
Day 12: Trek upto Jeng La.
Day 13: Trek from Jeng La towards Sisaul Village.
Day 14: Trek from Sisaul Village to Laina Odar.
Day 15: Trek from Laina Odar to Lingdo.
Day 16: Trek from Lingdo to Duani.
Day 17: Short trerk upto Juphal Airpot.
Day 18: Back to Kathmandu.
Day 01: Today we take al flight from Kathmandu to Nepalguj. We observe and visit this busy crowded city rest of the day and stay overnight at Hotel.
Day 02: Today we take a flight early in the morning to reach Juphal. Then we trek through valley, wheat and vegetable field, meadow and across the river to reach Chhepka (2,840m). Stay overnight at guest house.
Day 03: The trek continues, sometimes flat, sometimes up and sometimes down, through delightful fir, larch and birch forest, the valley occasionally narrowing dramatically between impressive steep cliffs. We pass through many villages on the way finally to reach Menkhang (3110m). Stay overnight at guest house.
Day 04: Todays scenic trek passes through prayer flags, 170m high Phoksundo Waterfall, forest and many small cultural villages to reach the colorful Phoksundo Lake at the height of 3730m. Stay overnight at camp in Phoksundo lakeside.
Day 05: Today is rest and acclimatization day. What a perfect place to acclimatize for the higher altitudes ahead. Here we can also visit an interesting Bon gompa (monastery) with a statue of the religion’s founder, Tonpa Shenrab Miwoche.
Day 06: Today we trek up through Phoksundo Lake passing the glacier, pasture, difficult trail and mountain views to reach Chunemba (3640m). Stay overnight at Clamp in Blue Pine Forest.
Day 07: Today we trek north up the glacial valley, crossing a couple of streams before entering a narrow gorge. We make a long steepest hike up to Snowfields (4.400m), a name bestowed on the place by Peter Matthiessen. Stay overnight at camp.
Day 08: Today we trek up a bit difficult trail keeping eyes open for blue sheep and snow leopard land cross the Ngadra La Pass (5,370m) and finally reach Shey Gompa (4,310m). Stay overnight at camp.
Day 09: Today we hike up a narrow valley and make easy crossing of Shey La (5000m) Pass. Crossing through fields and Tibetan Plateau view to finally reach Namgung (4,430m). Stay overnight at Camp.
Day 10: Today we pass through cultural settlement of Upper Dolpo called Saldang and pass through sheep and yak pasture to reach Sibu (4200m). Stay overnight at camp.
Day 11: Today we trek along the river and we enter the uninhibited valley. Being careful with the blue sheep and snow leopard we reach Lagmo Che (4570m). Stay overnight at tented camp.
Day 12: Today we make a steep trek up to Jeng La, from where we have spectacular views of Dhaulagiri (8,167m) and other snow-capped peaks, before hiking down into the Tarap Valley and trekking into Tokyu (4,210m). The gompa here is worth a visit and has a beautiful statue of Maitreya, the Future Buddha. Stay overnight at camp.
Day 13: Today we trek past Crystal School run by French NGO and reach Dho Tarap (4,080m); a cultural and traditional village. Then we head forward towards Sisaul Village (3,750m). Stay overnight at Guest House.
Day 14: Today we make our way being careful with the blue sheep and snow leopard passing through valley, pine forest and rocky trail to reach Laina Odar (3,370). Stay overnight at Guest house.
Day 15: Today we trek through gorge, fir and juniper forest, ancient gompa, cedar forest and pass across the river to reach Lingdo (2,390m). Stay overnight at Guest House.
Day 16: Today we trek down the route passing through rocky landscape, green forest, far distance mountain panorama and river to finally reach the capital of Dolpo district; Duani (2140m). Stay overnight at guest house.
Day 17: Today we make a short trek up the route through fields of barley and wheat and the peach and apricot trees to reach Juphal airport. Stay overnight at Guest house.
Day 18: Today early in the morning we take a flight to Nepalgunj. Later we take another flight back to Kathmandu.
